“The two biggest things, to me, luxury is defined by the amount of space that you have as a guest on board, and also the number of guests on board the ship,” Bias told USA TODAY.

Most luxury ships carry between 400 and 600 passengers. Compare that to mega-ships that can hold over 5,000 people. You’ll immediately notice the difference when you board.

Subtle Elegance Over Flashy Features

Walk onto a mainstream cruise ship and you’re hit with bright LED lights and flashy décor. Everything screams “look at me!”

Luxury ships take the opposite approach. Lines like Seabourn, Silversea Cruises, and Crystal choose understated elegance instead.

“You know, the big cruise ships are very flashy with, not so much neon these days, but the indirect lighting and LED strip lighting, where everything is just, you know, ‘wow,'” Bias said. Luxury ships feature “more toned down” and “very refined decor.”

Don’t expect to find roller coasters, water slides, or mini-golf courses on these ships. The focus is on sophisticated amenities like spas and elegant pools. And before you worry about bringing kids – many luxury lines like Explora Journeys and Regent Seven Seas Cruises welcome families.

Your Room Will Actually Be Roomy

Forget cramped quarters. Luxury cruise cabins give you space to breathe and move around comfortably.

“The minimum square footage for a lead-in suite is what they would call them, is about 365 square feet,” Bias explained. “And that’s pretty large for the cruise industry.”

That’s more than twice the size of typical interior rooms on big ships, which often measure around 150 square feet. Your luxury cabin feels more like a real hotel room than a floating closet.

The experience starts before you even board. “For example, they’ll meet you at the pier, they’ll escort you on board right to your suite,” Bias said. “They check you in in the suite, as opposed to queuing on the pier.”

Many luxury ships include butler service. Having one person as your main contact makes everything smoother and more personalized throughout your trip.

Almost Everything Is Actually Included

Here’s where luxury cruises often surprise people – they include much more in the base price. Things that cost extra on big ships come free on luxury lines.
