Carnival Cruise Guests File Lawsuit Against Cruise Line Over Alleged Bed Bug Infestation in Their Cabin

Two cruise passengers are taking Carnival Cruise Line to court after finding bed bugs in their room. The lawsuit raises important questions about cabin cleanliness that all cruisers should know about.
What Happened on the Carnival Horizon
Catherine Shockley and William Maycock booked a cruise on Carnival Horizon in February 2025. Things went wrong fast when they woke up with red marks all over their bodies.
Shockley searched their cabin and found live bed bugs in different life stages. She also spotted bed bug droppings and eggs throughout the room.
The Maryland couple reported more than 30 individual bites between them. According to their lawsuit, they dealt with intense itching, painful welts, and lost sleep during their vacation.
The Cruise Line’s Response to the Problem
The passengers told the ship’s crew about the bed bugs right away. But according to the lawsuit, staff didn’t take steps to fix the problem in or around their cabin.
Here’s the concerning part: The suit claims crew members were already fumigating other rooms on the same floor before passengers even boarded. This suggests Carnival knew about a bed bug issue but didn’t warn guests.
Grant I. Schwarz represents the couple in their lawsuit. “My clients trusted Carnival Cruise (Line) to provide a safe and sanitary cruise vacation experience,” he told USA TODAY. “Instead, they were exposed to a bed bug infestation in their cabin that caused painful injuries, emotional distress, property damage and long-term anxiety about travel and lodging.”
The lawsuit accuses Carnival of three things: failing to warn passengers, failing to maintain the ship properly, and general negligence. Shockley and Maycock want a jury trial and financial compensation.
How Carnival Handles Bed Bug Prevention
Carnival declined to comment on the pending lawsuit. But the company said it has “an extensive and thorough guest room sanitation process, including special procedures to address the rare instances when a guest might raise a concern.”
The cruise line posts its bed bug detection plan on its website. All room attendants learn how to spot signs of bed bugs. They must inspect every cabin weekly.
These inspections check beds, curtains, carpets, and other areas. When crew members find signs of an infestation, they treat that cabin and nearby rooms with chemicals. Those rooms get re-inspected for several months afterward.
All cabins also receive pest control treatment during regular maintenance periods.
Understanding the Bed Bug Reality
Bed bugs can show up anywhere people sleep or sit. Hotels, cruise ships, trains, homes, and apartments all deal with them occasionally.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention makes an important point: Cleanliness doesn’t determine whether bed bugs are present. Even spotless rooms can have them because the bugs hitchhike on luggage and clothing.
Bed bugs don’t spread diseases to humans. But their bites cause itching and sleep loss. Some people rarely have allergic reactions to the bites.
Carnival Horizon passed its CDC sanitation inspection in late February with a score of 93.
What This Means for Cruise Travelers
This lawsuit highlights a reality of travel that many people don’t think about. Bed bugs can happen on any cruise ship, just like they can in any hotel.
The key issues in this case aren’t really about the bugs themselves. The lawsuit focuses on whether Carnival knew about the problem and failed to warn guests.
Smart travelers should always inspect their cabin when they board. Check the mattress seams, headboard, and nearby furniture for small brown bugs or dark spots. Keep your luggage on racks away from the bed.
If you find bed bugs, report them immediately and request a room change. Take photos and document everything. Most cruise lines will work to resolve the issue quickly.
The lawsuit is still pending in Florida court. It serves as a reminder to stay vigilant about cabin conditions, no matter which cruise line you choose.
