Holland America Launches New Alaska Moose Experience for 2026

Holland America Line just announced something special for wildlife lovers. The cruise line picked National Moose Day (January 25) to reveal a brand-new Alaska shore excursion. This exclusive tour takes guests behind the scenes at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

The experience gives passengers an up-close look at moose and other Alaska animals in their natural surroundings. It’s a chance to see these massive creatures while learning how conservationists care for them.

Why This Tour Matters

Holland America knows what Alaska cruisers want. Kacy Cole serves as the cruise line’s chief marketing officer.

“Seeing wildlife is one of the top reasons guests choose to cruise Alaska,” said Cole. “This new shore excursion gives our guests an extraordinary opportunity to connect with moose in a way that is both unforgettable and responsible, working alongside conservation experts to support the animals and the environment they call home.”

The cruise line says it leads the industry for Alaska Wildlife and Wilderness Tours. They now offer more than 200 different Alaska experiences for guests to choose from.

What the Tour Includes

The “Exclusive Eland & Friends Moose Discovery” tour launches during the 2026 Alaska cruise season. Guests start with a scenic drive along Alaska’s famous Seward Highway.

At the conservation center, visitors get a guided behind-the-scenes look at daily operations. You’ll learn how the staff takes care of the moose through various activities. This includes preparing their food, watching their behavior, and providing enrichment activities.

A trained AWCC naturalist leads each tour. The experience works for visitors of all ages and abilities.

Meet Eland the Moose

One special resident might greet tour guests during their visit. Eland arrived at the center in June 2025 after his previous home closed down.

His name comes from the Dutch word for moose. Holland America Line asked their social media followers to pick the name. It connects to the cruise line’s Dutch roots and heritage.

A Partnership Built on Conservation

Sarah “Howie” Howard leads the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center as executive director. She’s excited about what this partnership means for both animals and visitors.

“Partnerships like this allow us to deepen both care and connection,” said Howard. “This shore excursion invites guests to experience moose up close in a thoughtful way while learning firsthand how exceptional animal care and conservation education support long-term wildlife protection.”

Holland America donated $150,000 to the conservation center. The money supports ongoing animal care and a new viewing area called the Holland America Moose Promenade.

This elevated boardwalk will overlook the moose habitat. It gives guests a safe and comfortable place to watch the animals. The design also keeps the moose safe and unstressed.

Construction should start in fall 2026. The cruise line expects it to be ready for the 2027 Alaska season.

Holland America also donated wooden benches from their ship Noordam. They gave mooring ropes from Westerdam too. These pieces add authentic nautical touches to the conservation center.

More Ways to Support Wildlife

The partnership between Holland America and AWCC started in 2024. Guests sailing to Alaska can help support the cause in several fun ways.

Two special cocktails are available onboard. The Grizzly Bear Hugo’s Spritz and Pip & Jo’s Moscow Moose each donate $1 to AWCC. That happens with every drink ordered.
