Carnival Cruise Line just sent another load of hurricane relief supplies to Jamaica. The Carnival Horizon carried the much-needed items to Ocho Rios today.
The ship delivered 24 pallets of supplies weighing over five tons. These included hygiene kits, medical supplies, and other essential items. The effort was a team project between Direct Relief, the Miami HEAT, and the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation.
Miami HEAT Legend Helps Pack Supplies
Before the ship left port, some special guests helped load the cargo. Miami HEAT legend Alonzo Mourning joined the packing effort. The team’s mascot Burnie was there too, along with Captain Niccolo De Ranieri and other Carnival crew members.
“This partnership demonstrates the strength of coming together to help those in need,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Carnival is proud to work alongside Direct Relief, the Miami HEAT and the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation to deliver these essential supplies to Jamaica.”
Relief Organizations Team Up for Major Impact
Direct Relief is leading this humanitarian response effort. The organization knows how important it is to get help to people quickly after disasters.
“After a disaster of this magnitude, people need to know that care will be there when they need it,” said Amy Weaver, CEO of Direct Relief. “Because of the longstanding partnership and commitment of Carnival Corporation, the Miami HEAT and the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation, we’re able to get essential medical support to communities across Jamaica as they continue to recover.”
The Miami HEAT also understands the serious nature of the situation. Hurricane Melissa caused major damage across Jamaica that will take years to fix.
“The devastation of Hurricane Melissa was incredible and will be felt in Jamaica for years to come,” said Eric Woolworth, president of business operations for the Miami HEAT. “Along with Direct Relief and Carnival, it’s our hope that the supplies we send will help start the road to recovery.”
Massive Relief Effort Takes Shape
This cruise ship delivery is just part of a much bigger relief operation. On December 13th, a special cargo plane left Miami International Airport. It carried 120 pallets of medical supplies to help Jamaican hospitals and clinics.
When you add both shipments together, the total comes to 144 pallets. That’s 68 tons of medical aid heading to Jamaica. This makes it one of the largest private-sector relief efforts helping Jamaica recover from the storm.
Million-Dollar Commitment Funds Relief Work
The funding for these relief efforts came from a major donation made in November. Carnival Corporation, the Miami HEAT, and the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation joined forces. Together, they donated $1 million to Direct Relief.
This donation made both the cruise ship delivery and the cargo plane possible. The money will also support long-term recovery work across the region. It shows how cruise companies can use their ships and resources to help communities in crisis.
