Carnival Cruise Line is doing its part to help Jamaica bounce back after Hurricane Melissa struck the island nation. The cruise line is bringing ships back to ports that can safely welcome guests again.
Hurricane Melissa was one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Caribbean region. The powerful hurricane hit Jamaica on October 28, 2025, causing major damage to the country’s roads, buildings, and communities.
Some Ports Still Closed, Others Ready for Visitors
Carnival’s brand ambassador John Heald shared updates about which Jamaican ports are open for business. He explained that some areas are still working hard to rebuild.
“We are still unable to go to Montego Bay. They are very much in a cleanup process and getting the infrastructure back together again,” Heald said in his recent update.
Ships that were supposed to visit Montego Bay are being sent to other destinations instead. The good news is that Ocho Rios is open and ready to welcome cruise passengers.
“We are going to do our best to divert you to Ocho Rios, which is open and ready and already welcoming our ships,” Heald explained.
Carnival Ships Return to Help Jamaica’s Economy
Several Carnival ships have already visited Ocho Rios since the hurricane. The Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Horizon, and Carnival Pride are among the vessels that have docked at the port.
Heald thanked cruise passengers for their role in helping Jamaica recover. Every dollar spent on the island makes a real difference for local businesses and workers.
“We thank you once again for going to Ocho Rios, getting off the ship, and spending perhaps a few dollars whether it’s on an excursion from the ship or doing some shopping,” Heald said in a video message to guests.
He added, “Your money, of course, will really help them get back on their feet again. We are so glad that we can dock our ships in Ocho Rios.”
Relief Efforts Beyond Tourism
Carnival isn’t just bringing cruise ships back to Jamaica. The company also delivered relief supplies to communities across the island earlier this month.
Carnival Corporation teamed up with the Miami HEAT basketball team and the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation. Together, they donated $1 million to Direct Relief, an organization that helps with disaster recovery efforts.
Heald reminded travelers about the lasting impact of natural disasters on local communities. “As we live our everyday lives, it’s easy to forget what happened in the past. That’s part of life, but we must not forget what Melissa did to Jamaica,” he said.
