Viking River Cruises Profile
With at least 70 river ships in the fleet, Viking is probably the most well-known of all the river cruise lines. All staterooms on their signature Viking Longships have river views, well-trained staff keep the ships running like clockwork. Chefs have been known to lead small group shore excursions to local markets and prepare regional cuisine.
It’s a massive river cruise operation that somehow the Viking management team handles with ease.

Ships: The line is known for unique longships. In total, Viking has 69 river ships, with two to be launched in 2022; one on the Mississippi River and the other built for the Nile. Viking sails 53 Longships throughout Europe, and will have four ships sailing the Nile river.
Passengers: From 82 – 190 depending on the itinerary.
Personality/Decor: Longships are Scandinavian Modern in design. Plenty of glass and minimalist interiors helps create a feeling of spaciousness despite having 190 passengers on board.
Fellow Passengers: As you’ll find on most river cruises, the demographic tends to be older, 55 years and up, well-traveled and retired. There’s the occasional younger honeymoon couple and solo guests. Most passengers hail from the United States with some Brits, Aussies and New Zealanders.
Because of their success with advertising, you’ll also find first-time river cruisers who’ve seen the TV or print ads.
Cabins: The smallest cabins are 135 square feet. By moving guest hallways off center, Viking created space for two-room suites and staterooms with real balconies. Two 445-square-foot Explorer Suites on each ship are among the largest suites available.
Alternative Dining: By rounding the bow, the cruise line found room for the Aquavit Terrace, a wonderful indoor/outdoor casual dining spot that, at dinner, features a grill menu.
Included Alcohol: Wine and beer with lunch and dinner, and mimosas at breakfast.
Amenities: There’s a long stretch of shaded space on the sundeck with plenty of chairs. Suite guests will find complimentary bottles of wine, fresh fruit and more delivered to their stateroom.
Best For: Travelers looking for a time-tested, well-planned river cruise experience. Cruise on any of the Viking Longships and you’ll feel right at home no matter which ship you choose.
Leisure: Putting green and shuffleboard on the sun deck; spa services can be arranged at ports.
Extras: Longships’ “green features” include an herb garden and solar panels on the top sundeck. The ships have two-deck, sunlit atriums with computers and Internet access, plus a 24-hour coffee station.
