A crew member from Viking Star cruise ship went overboard in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday morning. The incident has prompted an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
The overboard incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on October 27, 2024. Viking Star was sailing between the Greek island of Crete and Sicily, Italy at the time.
Search and Rescue Efforts Continue
“The ship’s emergency response was immediately activated, and an extensive search operation was launched, in coordination with the Italian Coast Guard,” Viking Cruises said in an emailed statement.
The Italian Coast Guard received the initial report when Viking Star was about 100 nautical miles southeast of the Calabria coast. Multiple rescue teams quickly responded to help with the search efforts.
Search and rescue operations are still ongoing. However, authorities released Viking Star from search duties on Monday evening. The ship has now continued on its planned voyage.
Viking’s Response to the Incident
Viking expressed deep sadness about what happened to their crew member. “We are deeply saddened by what has occurred,” the cruise line said. “Our thoughts are with the family of our crew member, and we will continue to support them during this difficult time.”
The company declined to share more details about the incident. They cited privacy concerns for the crew member and their family. Viking added that it “will provide updates when they become available and appropriate.”

Viking did not respond to questions about whether Viking Star has overboard detection systems. This technology helps cruise ships respond faster when someone goes overboard. The systems automatically alert crew members when a person falls into the water.
