Royal Caribbean International’s new ship, the Icon of the Seas, is proving to be very popular in the family cruise market, currently sailing at 132 percent occupancy, according to Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean.
With the ship’s double occupancy capacity at around 5,600, a 132 percent load factor translates to approximately 7,400 guests aboard, with staterooms utilizing third and fourth berths, and sometimes more.
In cruise industry terms, a ship is considered 100 percent full at double occupancy, meaning two guests per stateroom.
How does this compare to the Royal Caribbean Group’s overall fleet? While the company does not provide specific figures for individual brands like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Silversea, TUI, and Hapag Lloyd, the Royal Caribbean Group reported an overall occupancy of 108.2 percent for the second quarter of 2024, up from 105 percent in 2023.
