The Zuiderdam recently departed from Boston to begin Holland America Line’s 35-night “Voyage of the Vikings.” This is part of Holland America’s Legendary Voyages program, which focuses on longer, more immersive itineraries.

The ship will visit 20 destinations across Canada, New England, Greenland, Iceland, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia. One highlight is an overnight stop in Rotterdam, Netherlands — plenty of time to really soak in the city.

Hidden Gems Along the Way

What makes this voyage special is its mix of well-known ports and lesser-visited spots. The Zuiderdam will stop at places like Red Bay in Canada, Paamiut in Greenland, Husavik in Iceland, and Douglas on the Isle of Man.

• Late 2026: The ship heads to PortMiami for seven- to 10-night Caribbean cruises.

A Major Refurbishment Is Coming

Holland America recently confirmed that the Zuiderdam will be the second ship in its fleet to go through the company’s Evolution refurbishment program. The Oosterdam goes first, and then it’s the Zuiderdam‘s turn.

The upgrades sound impressive. The 1,900-passenger ship will get new solo staterooms — each with a private balcony. That’s great news for solo travelers who don’t want to give up outdoor space.

The ship will also receive a Grand Dutch Café. This coffee shop concept is inspired by European café culture and first appeared on Holland America’s newer Pinnacle-class ships.

The Biggest Fleet Investment in Holland America’s History

The Evolution program is no small effort. Holland America has described it as the largest fleet investment in the company’s 153-year history.

Beyond the Zuiderdam, four more ships are in line for refurbishments: the Westerdam, the Noordam, the Eurodam, and the Nieuw Amsterdam. It’s clear that Holland America is serious about upgrading the experience across its entire fleet.
