Viking Announces the Names of Its Next Two Ocean Ships

Viking just announced names for two more ocean ships joining its growing fleet — and they’re coming with some exciting itineraries attached.

Viking Names Two New Ocean Ships

Viking has revealed the names of its next two ocean cruise ships. They will be called the Viking Leda and the Viking Vega. Both ships are currently being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.

Each ship will carry up to 998 passengers. The Viking Leda is expected to join the fleet in late 2028, and the Viking Vega will follow in mid-2029.

What to Expect From These Ships

The Leda and Vega will be the 17th and 18th ocean ships Viking has built at Fincantieri. They’ll each weigh in at 47,000 tons. Their design will be similar to the Viking Star, the first ship Viking ever launched back in 2015.

These ships will feel familiar to fans of the Viking style. Think understated Scandinavian design, a focus on destination immersion, and an adults-only atmosphere.

Viking Leda: Mediterranean Winters

The Viking Leda will make its debut in December 2028, launching with a winter season in the Mediterranean. Itineraries will run between 8 and 16 days in length.

Departures will set off from ports in Greece, Italy, and Spain. Destinations include the Greek Islands, the French Riviera, and Morocco. It’s a solid lineup for travelers who love warm-weather winter escapes.

Viking Vega: Southern Europe and the British Isles

The Viking Vega will welcome its first guests in June 2029, starting out in the Mediterranean. The ship will then head north to the British Isles by mid-July 2029.

Departure ports during its inaugural season include Civitavecchia (near Rome), Barcelona, Bergen, and ports in the United Kingdom. It’s a nice mix for travelers who want both sunny Southern Europe and dramatic northern coastlines.

More New Ships Already in the Pipeline

The Leda and Vega are just part of a much bigger expansion for Viking. Before these two ships arrive, Viking is set to take delivery of the Viking Libra, Viking Astrea, and Viking Lyra between 2026 and 2028.

The Astrea and Lyra are especially noteworthy. They’ll be the first hydrogen-powered cruise ships in the industry. Scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028, these ships will be able to run with zero emissions using a new containerized fuel system.

Viking’s Fleet Is Growing Fast

In total, Viking currently has nine ships on order, with deliveries planned through 2031. The lineup also includes two new expedition ships. They’ll join the existing Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris in 2030 and 2031.

For fans of Viking’s low-key luxury style, the next few years are looking very exciting. There will be more ships, more destinations, and some genuinely cutting-edge technology on the horizon.
