Royal Caribbean Cancels Anthem of the Seas Cruise Due to Technical Problems

Royal Caribbean International has canceled an upcoming cruise on the Anthem of the Seas. The ship was supposed to leave Sydney, Australia on January 27, 2026.
The cruise line announced the cancellation after the ship experienced technical issues. Anthem of the Seas is currently heading to Eden, Australia for repairs.
What Happened to Anthem of the Seas?
The ship ran into trouble during its most recent sailing. Royal Caribbean sent a message to guests who had booked the canceled cruise.
“The Anthem of the Seas experienced a technical issue on its last sailing, and we’re returning to begin required maintenance,” Royal Caribbean explained.
The cruise line said repairs won’t be finished in time for the January 27 departure. The ship will dock in Eden later this week to start the maintenance work.
About the Canceled Cruise
The canceled voyage was a ten-night cruise to New Zealand. The Anthem of the Seas was sailing in Australia for the winter season.
Guests were supposed to visit five New Zealand ports. The stops included Picton, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. The 4,202-passenger ship also planned scenic cruising through Fjordland National Park.
What Compensation Will Guests Receive?
Royal Caribbean apologized to affected passengers in its statement. “We know how much time and effort go into planning your cruise, and we’re truly sorry for this disappointing news,” Royal Caribbean said.
The cruise line is offering full refunds to all booked guests. This includes 100 percent of the cruise fare plus all taxes and fees.
Passengers will also get money back for pre-paid packages and gratuities. Any shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean will be refunded too.
Additional Credits and Reimbursements
Beyond the full refund, Royal Caribbean is providing extra compensation. “Additionally, to make up for this, you’ll also receive a 25 percent Future Cruise Credit (FCC) to be used towards a future sailing departing within one year,” Royal Caribbean added.
The cruise line will also reimburse non-refundable travel expenses. This covers flights, hotels, train tickets, and rental cars that guests already paid for.
Domestic flight changes qualify for up to $200 per person. International flight changes can be reimbursed up to $400 per person.
Hotel costs are covered up to $250 per stateroom for two nights. Guests can also claim up to $100 per person, per day for incidentals.
