Holland America Cruise Line Successfully Delivers Emergency Aid and Volunteers to Jamaica While Safely Transporting Guests
Holland America’s Zuiderdam Brings Hurricane Relief to Jamaica

After Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica, Holland America Line stepped up to help. The cruise ship Zuiderdam arrived in Ocho Rios with tons of disaster relief supplies. The ship carried both volunteers and regular cruise guests who wanted to make a difference.
The cruise line’s president, Beth Bodensteiner, explained their mission. “We are honored to return to Ocho Rios and deeply grateful for the collaboration with the port, local community, and tour operators,” she said. “The decision was made with care and respect, knowing that tourism is vital to Jamaica’s recovery and future.”
Massive Relief Effort Delivers Thousands of Supply Boxes
Zuiderdam wasn’t alone in its relief mission. The ship was one of two vessels that docked in Ocho Rios on November 11. Before reaching Ocho Rios, the ship made a stop at Reynolds Pier to drop off additional supplies.
The relief effort was huge. Zuiderdam delivered almost 5,000 boxes packed with essential items. These boxes contained food, clean water, bedding, clothing, and mattresses for families in need.
The ship also brought specific supplies to Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management. These included shelf-stable food items, toiletries, cleaning products, and baking supplies.
Local Officials Express Deep Gratitude
Jamaica’s tourism officials were thankful for the cruise line’s help. Hon. Matthew Samuda represents Northeast St. Ann in Jamaica’s Parliament. He spoke for both his community and Jamaica’s Tourism Minister.
“On behalf of the people of St. Ann, and also representing Minister of Tourism Hon. Edmund Bartlett today, I want to sincerely thank Holland America Line for this incredibly timely donation,” Samuda said. He noted the cruise line delivered 20 pallets of food and water to the tourism area.
Samuda emphasized how important this help was for the community. “St. Ann is a vital part of that corridor, and as we work to restore full services—especially water—this support helps us keep workers, families, and small businesses going through a very tough period,” he explained.
Cruise Tourism Supports Recovery Efforts
The return of cruise ships means more than just relief supplies. These visits bring back jobs and income that local families depend on. Samuda highlighted this connection between cruise tourism and community recovery.
“It also sends a clear message: cruise partners aren’t just coming to enjoy Jamaica, they are standing with us in recovery,” he said. “Every ship that returns to Ocho Rios strengthens jobs, protects livelihoods, and helps our community bounce back stronger.”
The partnership between cruise lines and local communities shows how tourism can be a force for good. When disasters strike, these relationships become lifelines for recovery.
More Help on the Way
Holland America Line’s relief efforts didn’t stop with supply delivery. The cruise line planned additional fundraising activities during the sailing. Guests and crew members will participate in a special 5K walk organized by Direct Relief.
The event is called “On Deck for a Cause 5K.” Money raised from the walk will go to Direct Relief’s Hurricane Melissa Fund. This fund supports ongoing recovery efforts in Jamaica and other affected areas.
