MSC Cruises Is Building a Brand-New Private Island

MSC Cruises has just revealed plans for a new private island destination called Sandy Cay. It will sit right next to their already-popular Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas. Guests from both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys will be able to visit starting in 2028.

Why MSC Is Expanding in the Bahamas

Ocean Cay has been a big hit with cruisers since it opened. The island offers beautiful beaches, food and drinks, shore excursions, and even supports real scientific research on marine habitats. Its success made MSC want to do more.

Lynn Torrent, president of MSC Cruises North America, pointed to strong guest feedback as the driving force. “The success of Ocean Cay helped validate our long-term vision for private destinations, and ultimately led to the development of Sandy Cay,” Torrent told USA TODAY. “So, as MSC Cruises continues to grow in North America, and we continue to increase capacity from U.S. homeports, adding Sandy Cay allows us to expand capacity while offering guests more variety and more tailored experiences in line with the brand.”

What to Expect at Sandy Cay

Sandy Cay will sit surrounded by the same stunning turquoise waters as Ocean Cay. MSC describes it as a “more secluded, elemental escape.” The vibe sounds like a quieter, more laid-back version of its neighbor.

Torrent gave a peek at the island’s personality. “It’ll have sort of its own soul and DNA, where elegance is fused with the authentic spirit of the Bahamas, preserving that very relaxed, genuine atmosphere that our guests love about Ocean Cay, but really an extension of that,” she said. Specific details about amenities haven’t been announced yet, so stay tuned.

MSC Is Growing Beyond Sandy Cay, Too

Sandy Cay isn’t the only new land-based development from the MSC Group. A subsidiary called CTL Maritime recently announced plans to develop part of the Grand Lucayan Resort on Grand Bahama Island. That space will become a beach club for MSC and Explora Journeys passengers.

Ocean Cay itself is also getting some upgrades. MSC announced improvements earlier this year that include new dining options and an extended pier. The updated pier will allow two ships to dock at the same time. There will also be an adults-only beach and hands-on marine conservation activities for guests.

What This Means for Cruise Travelers

For U.S.-based cruisers, this is great news. MSC sails from several American homeports, so Sandy Cay could easily end up on a Bahamas itinerary near you. With more private island options available, MSC is clearly building out a stronger Caribbean experience for its guests.
