Norwegian Viva Moves to PortMiami as Puerto Rico Season Gets Canceled

Norwegian Cruise Line just made a big change to its 2027-28 winter plans. Here’s what affected cruisers need to know.

Norwegian Viva Is Moving to Miami

The Norwegian Viva is switching home ports for the 2027-28 winter season. NCL has cancelled all San Juan departures that were planned for late 2027 through early 2028. Instead, the ship will sail out of PortMiami.

The Viva was originally set to depart San Juan every Sunday from November through April. Those cruises would have visited popular spots like Aruba and Curaçao. All of those itineraries are now off the table.

What Happens If You Had a Booking?

If you were booked on one of the cancelled San Juan sailings, NCL has a plan for you. The cruise line says affected guests will get a full refund within 30 business days. On top of that, you’ll receive a 10% Future Cruise Credit (FCC).

NCL described the FCC as “a token of appreciation for guests’ patience.” You can use it on any sailing departing through 2027. That gives you a decent window to plan something new.

Still Want to Sail from San Juan?

NCL isn’t leaving Southern Caribbean fans without options. The Norwegian Prima will continue sailing round-trip itineraries from San Juan. The Prima is the Viva’s sister ship, so the onboard experience will be very similar.

NCL pointed out that these itineraries include “many of the same highly requested destinations, as well as the same convenient and accessible departure point you originally chose.” So if San Juan works best for you, the Prima is worth a look.

The cruise line also noted that both ships offer the “same high-quality amenities and experiences.” Switching ships shouldn’t feel like a downgrade.

Where Is the Viva Going Instead?

From PortMiami, the Norwegian Viva will sail short getaway cruises to the Bahamas. The main destination is Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island. The island is currently going through a major makeover.

NCL says guests will get to enjoy “The Great Life in a completely new way.” Several new features are already open or coming soon. These additions make the island feel more like a full resort experience.

What’s New at Great Stirrup Cay?

The island has seen some big upgrades recently. New highlights include the Great Life Lagoon, a large pool area with two aquatic bars. There’s also the Vibe Shore Club, an adults-only area for those wanting a quieter escape.

NCL is also opening a brand-new waterpark called Great Tides this September. It will feature 19 water slides, a dynamic river, water features, and more. As NCL put it, “Everything was designed to make your shore stay just as memorable as your experience onboard.”
