Stranded Cruise Ships Finally Break Free From the Strait of Hormuz
Several cruise ships that were stuck in the Middle East during the conflict with Iran have finally made it through the Strait of Hormuz. Here’s what happened and what it means for upcoming sailings.
Ships Clear the Strait of Hormuz
Multiple cruise ships were stranded in the Middle East after Iran’s conflict disrupted marine traffic in the region. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. Without access to it, ships had no way out.

Iran temporarily lifted its blockade on ship traffic through the strait. That window allowed several vessels to make their escape. The U.S. has continued to maintain its own blockade on Iranian ports.
TUI Cruises Ships Head to Cape Town
Two ships from TUI Cruises — Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5 — passed through the Strait of Hormuz by early afternoon on April 19. Both ships are now headed to Cape Town, South Africa. Mein Schiff 4 had been docked in Abu Dhabi, while Mein Schiff 5 was in Doha, Qatar.
Guests from both ships had already been sent home in early to mid-March. Most crew members followed shortly after. Now, the ships are finally on the move again.
TUI Cruises CEO Wybcke Meier praised the teams who made it happen. “The past few weeks have presented us all with extraordinary challenges,” she said. “I would like to extend my special thanks to our captains, the crews and all the teams on board and ashore who have helped to overcome this situation with great professionalism, caution and dedication. We are therefore all the more delighted that we can now swiftly return to regular operations and deploy our entire fleet as planned.”
Canceled Sailings Are Back On
Two upcoming TUI Cruises departures had been scrapped because of the situation. Mein Schiff 4 was set to leave from Trieste, Italy on May 17. Mein Schiff 5 had a departure from Heraklion, Greece on May 15. Both sailings are now back on the schedule.
MSC Euribia Makes It Through
MSC Euribia left Dubai and cleared the Strait of Hormuz on April 18. The ship had no passengers on board during the transit. MSC Cruises confirmed the ship made it through safely.
With the ship returning sooner than expected, MSC Cruises announced that its Northern Europe season will start as planned. “MSC Euribia is on course to resume her Northern Europe season, and as the ship will now be able to return sooner than previously anticipated, MSC Cruises confirms that the cruise departing on May 16 from Kiel (and May 17 from Copenhagen) will now operate as originally scheduled, with all subsequent sailings operating as planned,” the company said.
Travelers whose cruises were canceled due to the situation can move their bookings to this May sailing.
Celestyal Cruises Ships Also Safe
Two Celestyal Cruises ships — Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey — also made it through the Strait of Hormuz. The cruise line confirmed both transits in an April 20 update on its website.
Celestyal gave a lot of credit to its captains and crews. “Safety remained the absolute priority throughout the operation, with outstanding leadership, expertise and calm command demonstrated by both ships’ captains, alongside onboard and shoreside teams,” the statement said. “Their efforts in navigating complex and sensitive conditions were instrumental in ensuring the safety of all crew and the successful passage of both ships.”
Passengers Already Disembarked
All guests from Celestyal Discovery were let off the ship in Dubai. Celestyal Journey’s remaining passengers were being disembarked in Doha as of March 9. Both ships will now reposition to the Mediterranean for their planned summer seasons.
What This Means for Cruise Travelers
This is good news for anyone who had a cruise booked on one of these ships. Sailings that were canceled are being reinstated. Travelers with affected bookings should check with their cruise line directly for the latest updates on their specific itineraries.
The situation served as a reminder of how global events can quickly impact cruise travel. These cruise lines acted fast to keep passengers safe and get their ships back on track.
