Solo Travelers Rejoice as a Major Cruise Line Unveils New Solo Cabins
Solo cruising is growing fast — and Holland America Line is taking notice. Here’s a look at what the cruise line has planned for solo travelers and suite lovers alike.
Holland America Line’s Big Makeover Plan
Holland America Line is investing more than $500 million to upgrade six of its ships. The renovations will happen one ship at a time over several years. The first ship to get the treatment will be Oosterdam, with changes arriving in fall 2027.

The upgrades go far beyond a fresh coat of paint. Passengers can expect new cabin categories, redesigned suites, and popular venues from the cruise line’s newer ships. Holland America is calling this sweeping project Holland America Evolution.
“This investment allows us to introduce experiences and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle-class favorites like Grand Dutch Café, and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America,” said Holland America Line President Beth Bodensteiner.
Solo Cruisers Are Getting Their Own Balcony Cabins
One of the biggest announcements is the addition of 30 Solo Verandah staterooms on Oosterdam. Each cabin will be 200 square feet and come with a private balcony. That’s a step up from the 12 Solo Ocean View staterooms found on Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships, which have no balcony.
Holland America made this change in response to “strong and growing guest demand.” And the numbers back that up. According to the Cruise Lines International Association’s 2025 State of the Cruise Industry Report, solo travelers made up 12% of cruise passengers in 2024 — double the 6% from the year before.
Travel agent Susan Guthrie, owner of Cruisin’ with Susan and More, says solo passengers are “a major growth segment.” She told USA TODAY that cruise lines are rethinking how they use space on ships because of this trend. “Cruise lines see the opportunity to allocate smaller spaces for solo travelers,” Guthrie said.
What Else Is New on Oosterdam?
Solo cabins aren’t the only exciting addition. Oosterdam will also gain several new suite options and popular dining venues. The ship will gain a total of 76 new staterooms as part of the project.
New Bridgeview Suites
Two brand-new Bridgeview Suites will be added to the ship. Each will measure 900 square feet. These suites are named for their views, which “emulate the perspective that can be seen from the ship’s bridge.” Expect panoramic windows and wraparound balconies.
Vista Suites and a Reimagined Pinnacle Suite
Oosterdam will also receive 24 Vista Suites, a category currently only found on Pinnacle Class ships. The ship’s existing Pinnacle Suite will be completely reimagined, growing to an impressive 1,550 square feet of living space.
Grand Dutch Café Makes Its Vista Class Debut
Fans of Holland America’s newer ships will be happy to hear that the Grand Dutch Café is coming to Oosterdam. This popular all-day spot serves coffee, sandwiches, and more. It’s currently only found on Pinnacle Class ships, so this will be its first appearance on a Vista Class vessel.
Sustainability Is Part of the Plan
Holland America isn’t just focused on adding new spaces. The cruise line is also thinking about the environment during the renovation process. According to the official release, “the line is refreshing and replacing interiors with a strong focus on waste reduction and circular design, prioritizing upcycling and material reuse while bringing greater lightness and an elevated, timeless look and feel.”
Which Other Ships Will Be Upgraded?
Oosterdam is just the first ship in line. Three other Vista Class ships — Zuiderdam, Noordam, and Westerdam — will also receive upgrades. Two Signature Class ships, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam, are part of the plan as well.
Holland America says it will share more details about Oosterdam’s updated voyages and the other ships’ renovation plans at hollandamerica.com/evolution in the coming weeks.
