A guest medical emergency forced Freedom of the Seas to change its cruise route this week. The ship left PortMiami on Saturday, January 25, 2026, for a five-night voyage.
The vessel had to turn around and head back to Miami after just one day at sea. The ship had visited Nassau in the Bahamas before returning to its home port on Sunday.
Ship Returns to Miami
Royal Caribbean explained what happened in a statement to guests onboard. The cruise line said a passenger needed urgent medical care that couldn’t be provided at sea.
“Late yesterday (Jan. 26, 2026) evening, our medical staff determined that one of our guests needed urgent medical attention, and we headed back to Miami, Florida, to safely disembark them,” the company said.
The detour meant big changes to the ship’s schedule. Monday became an unplanned sea day instead of a port visit.
New Port Replaces Cayman Islands
The ship was supposed to visit George Town in the Cayman Islands. That Western Caribbean stop had to be cancelled because of the medical emergency.
Royal Caribbean replaced the cancelled port with a new destination. The ship will now visit Freeport in the Bahamas on Wednesday instead.
The cruise line asked guests to be understanding about the change. “We appreciate your patience and understanding, knowing we’d do the same for you or a loved one in a similar situation,” the company said.
What Happens With Excursions
Guests who booked shore excursions in George Town will get their money back. Royal Caribbean will refund those tours as onboard credits.
You can spend these credits anywhere on the ship during your cruise. Any money you don’t use will go back to your credit card after the cruise ends.
About the New Port Stop
Royal Caribbean highlighted what guests can do in Grand Bahama. The island offers plenty of beach activities and nature experiences.
“In Grand Bahama Island, hike Rand’s Nature Center’s forest-lined trails and discover cascading waterfalls at the Garden of the Groves. Or, if relaxing is more your style, sip on a fruity Bahama Mama while enjoying the views of the crystal-clear waters,” the company said.
The Freedom of the Seas will complete its cruise as scheduled. The ship returns to PortMiami on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
The 2006-built vessel regularly sails short cruises from Miami to the Caribbean. Medical emergencies like this one sometimes require cruise ships to change their plans to help guests in need.
