Robert Downey Jr Named Godparent of Disney Adventure Cruise Ship
Robert Downey Jr. is no stranger to big moments. But his latest role might surprise you. The Academy Award-winning actor has been named the official godparent of the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.
Disney made the announcement with a clear nod to Downey’s iconic Marvel legacy. “Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “We are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure.”

Why Robert Downey Jr.?
The choice makes a lot of sense. Downey plays Tony Stark — better known as Iron Man — in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Disney Adventure features several Marvel-themed experiences spread across the ship. Having the face of the Avengers bless the ship was a natural fit.
Downey was also named an official Disney Legend back in 2019. That honor is given to people who have made a lasting impact on Disney’s history and storytelling. So his connection to the Disney brand runs deep.
In a video shared on YouTube, Downey said the ship’s massive size calls for an equally massive blessing. He called it “an honor and a privilege” to accept the role of godparent.
What Is a Ship Godparent?
In cruise tradition, a ship godparent is a celebrity or notable figure chosen to bless a new vessel. It’s a ceremonial role tied to maritime custom. The godparent typically plays a key part in the ship’s christening ceremony. It’s a big deal — and a fun way for cruise lines to generate excitement around a new ship launch.
Marvel Experiences Onboard the Disney Adventure
If you’re a Marvel fan, the Disney Adventure has a lot to offer. The ship is packed with superhero-themed attractions and entertainment. Here’s a look at what’s waiting for guests:
- Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run — This is said to be the first roller coaster ever built on a Disney Cruise Line ship. It’s also the longest roller coaster at sea. You’ll find it at Marvel Landing on the ship’s top decks.
- Avengers Assemble! Live Stage Show — This outdoor production takes place in the Disney Imagination Garden area. It features live stunts and special effects during a battle between Marvel Super Heroes and Villains.
- Marvel WEB Workshop — Located inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club, this experience lets younger guests try out Super Hero suit prototypes. Kids can also run training simulations using “top-secret Avengers technology.”
Where Is the Disney Adventure Now?
The Disney Adventure was built in Germany and is making its way to its home port in Singapore. The journey takes about two months. The ship stopped at the Port of Los Angeles in early February as part of that voyage.
Once it arrives in Singapore, the Disney Adventure will begin sailing from there. This makes it one of the first Disney Cruise Line ships based in Asia. It’s a major expansion for the brand and a big deal for cruisers in that part of the world.
A Ship Built for Big Stories
The Disney Adventure lives up to its name. It’s the largest ship Disney has ever put in the water. It blends classic Disney magic with cutting-edge entertainment and Marvel thrills. From a first-of-its-kind roller coaster to live superhero battles, this ship is designed to wow guests of all ages.
And now, with Robert Downey Jr. as its godparent, the Disney Adventure has a pretty impressive guardian watching over it. Whether you’re a lifelong Marvel fan or just looking for a cruise packed with fun, this ship is definitely one to keep an eye on.
