A tragic incident occurred aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship in late April. Here’s what we know about what happened.

The Cruise Itinerary
The Carnival Firenze had left Los Angeles on April 26 for a four-day Baja Mexico cruise. The ship’s scheduled stops included Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico. The incident occurred during this voyage.
What Carnival Had to Say
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident in a statement to USA TODAY. “As is customary following these kinds of incidents, law enforcement was on board while the ship was in Catalina Island on Monday to collect information,” the company said. “The family is now off the ship and has returned home. Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one.”
The cruise line did not release the guest’s name or share any additional details about the incident.
Law Enforcement Response
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed its involvement in the case. A search and rescue team from the Avalon Sheriff’s Station helped recover the victim. Officials directed further questions to federal authorities. The FBI had not responded to media requests for comment at the time of this report.
Balcony Incidents on Cruise Ships
Sadly, this is not the first time something like this has happened at sea. In 2023, a Virgin Voyages passenger also died after going over their balcony onto a lower deck. These incidents serve as a sobering reminder for all cruise travelers.
Balcony Safety Tips for Cruise Travelers
- Never climb on or lean over balcony railings.
- Keep children supervised at all times near balcony areas.
- Avoid alcohol use near open balcony edges.
- Report any safety concerns to ship staff right away.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the woman who passed away on this voyage.
