MSC Cruises Partners With ORCA to Protect Alaska’s Whales

MSC Cruises has teamed up with ORCA, a marine conservation organization, in what’s being called an industry-first partnership. The cruise line has welcomed Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) Maria Snell aboard the MSC Poesia for its Alaska season. This is a big deal for anyone who cares about responsible cruising in one of the world’s most stunning natural environments.

What Maria Snell Will Do Onboard

Snell isn’t just along for the scenery. She’ll conduct research on how passenger ships can operate more responsibly around whales. She’ll also review shore excursions with a conservation focus and give educational talks to guests. Plus, she’ll lead whale-watching experiences for passengers.

During peak whale season, Snell will use a specialized mobile observation setup. It combines high-powered binoculars with camera technology. This new research protocol was developed by ORCA specifically for use on the MSC Poesia.

Coppell added, “The insights gained through this collaboration will help inform future training, operational practices and broader industry discussions around responsible marine stewardship.”

What ORCA Hopes to Learn

ORCA’s chief operating officer, Steve Jones, is equally excited about what this project could uncover. “This project builds on a strong and longstanding partnership, giving us a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of how we can work together to study and protect whales in one of the richest marine habitats on Earth,” Jones said.

Jones also noted, “We are excited to see the findings from Snell’s time onboard and how they will help shape our future work with MSC Cruises as we continue our shared commitment to safeguarding whales and dolphins.”

When the project wraps up, ORCA plans to publish a full scientific report. The findings will be shared with the broader scientific and maritime communities.

Who Is Maria Snell?

Snell is a UK-based conservationist with impressive credentials. She holds a master’s degree in Global Wildlife Health and Conservation. She’s a certified Marine Mammal Observer and a key member of ORCA’s whale-vessel interaction research program.
