Holland America Single Cabins Receive a New Design Along With Dynamic Pricing

Solo cruisers, Holland America Line has some exciting news just for you. The cruise line is making its biggest fleet investment ever, and solo travelers are a big part of the plan.

Holland America’s Evolution Program: What You Need to Know

Holland America Line calls this its largest fleet investment in its 153-year history. The program is called “Evolution,” and it will update six ships in the fleet. New features will be added, and staterooms will get a fresh makeover.

The first two ships getting the upgrades are the Oosterdam and the Zuiderdam. One of the most exciting changes coming to these ships? Brand-new balcony cabins designed just for solo travelers.

Solo Verandahs: A First for Holland America

Holland America has never offered balcony cabins specifically for solo travelers — until now. These new rooms are called Solo Verandahs, and they’re being added because of growing demand.

President Beth Bodensteiner pointed to a clear trend in cruising. “We are seeing increased demand for balconies and above,” she said. She also noted this is happening across the entire cruise industry, not just on Holland America ships.

Solo travel is booming, and cruise lines are taking notice. “For a few years now, solo travelers are becoming more and more common, and people want experiences that are better geared toward them and their desire to travel on their own,” Bodensteiner explained.

Designed With Solo Travelers in Mind

Every detail of the Solo Verandahs was created with one person in mind: the solo cruiser. My Nguyen, Holland America’s director of interior design and interior operations, helped lead the effort.

“Our overarching goal was to create and design an experience that was focused on a solo traveler,” Nguyen said. She added, “Every centimeter of space is thought of. Everything, from well-appointed, comfortable, and functional elements to a ‘home-away-from-home’ feel, you’ll see in these designs.”

The cabins are sized for one person, but don’t let that fool you. Nguyen says the rooms still feel luxurious, comfortable, and beautiful. Sustainability was also baked into the design. The carpets, furniture, and headboards were all chosen with eco-friendly goals in mind.

Pricing and Availability

Thirty Solo Verandahs will be added to the Oosterdam. Holland America plans to use dynamic pricing for these cabins, meaning the price will go up or down based on demand.

“I anticipate pretty strong demand, but I think that they will end up being a better value for our solo travelers than what they have today,” Bodensteiner said. Solo travelers shouldn’t expect rock-bottom prices, though. “There are only 30 of these solo cabins; we will price those based on the individual demand for that particular itinerary and sailing,” she noted.

The Solo Verandahs will debut on the Oosterdam in late 2027. They are also set to be added to the Zuiderdam at a later date.

More Ships Are Getting Upgrades Too

The Evolution program goes beyond just two ships. Four more Holland America ships are scheduled for refurbishments: the Westerdam, the Noordam, the Eurodam, and the Nieuw Amsterdam. Details and dates for those updates haven’t been announced yet, but more news is expected in the future.
