Carnival Spirit Returns for Repairs: What Cruisers Need to Know

Carnival Spirit Heads Back for More Repairs and Here Is How It Affects Your Cruise

Carnival Spirit recently ran into some maintenance issues that affected a Panama Canal cruise. Here’s what happened and what guests can expect going forward.

Carnival Spirit Needs Repair Work During Panama Canal Voyage

Carnival Cruise Line told guests that the Carnival Spirit needed repair work during its April 12, 2026, sailing. The work caused changes to the ship’s schedule and itinerary.

The cruise was a 16-night Panama Canal voyage departing from Mobile, Alabama. It was also a repositioning trip, moving the ship to its new home port of Seattle.

What Port Did Carnival Spirit Miss?

The original itinerary included stops in Cartagena, Colombia, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Due to the repair work, the ship had to skip its planned stop in Cartagena.

Carnival explained the situation to guests in a letter: “Our engineers need to conduct in-service repair work on the ship before we begin our journey to Seattle.”

The company also noted that the work wouldn’t affect life on board. “The work, which does not affect shipboard services, can only be completed while the vessel is docked and will require extended time in port,” Carnival said.

Why Was Cartagena Cancelled?

The ship left Mobile on the afternoon of April 13 instead of April 12. That delay made it impossible to fit Cartagena into the schedule.

Carnival said the Panama Canal has a strict transit timeline. Skipping Cartagena was the only way to keep the rest of the trip on track.

What Compensation Did Guests Receive?

Carnival offered guests a $100 per stateroom onboard credit. The company said this was “a gesture of appreciation for your understanding.”

Any shore excursions booked for Cartagena were also cancelled. Guests received full refunds back to their original payment method.

This Isn’t the First Time for Carnival Spirit

This is actually the second itinerary change for the Spirit this month. Earlier in April, the ship missed a stop in Bimini due to similar maintenance work.

It’s worth noting that in-service repairs are sometimes unavoidable. Ships are complex machines that need upkeep, even while sailing.

Carnival Spirit Is Heading to Alaska

Once the Panama Canal repositioning voyage wraps up, the Spirit will be based in Seattle for Alaska season. She’ll join the Carnival Miracle and Carnival Luminosa as part of Carnival’s Alaska fleet this year.

The ship will offer seven-night Alaska cruises from Seattle. Ports of call will include popular stops like Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria, British Columbia.
