Cruise ship breaks loose in high winds passenger falls into sea
A cruise passenger had a frightening experience at a Greek port when strong winds caused a serious accident. Here’s what happened and what you should know.
Passenger Falls Into the Sea at Corfu Port
On June 30th, a female passenger fell into the water at the port of Corfu, Greece. Strong winds snapped the mooring lines holding the Norwegian Viva in place at the dock. This caused the boarding ladder to swing away from the pier, sending the woman into the sea.

The passenger was a 56-year-old woman from New Zealand. Crew members and port workers quickly pulled her from the water. She was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries to her face and body.
Norwegian Viva Captain Arrested
Greek coast guard officials arrested the ship’s captain following the incident. He is a 56-year-old Italian citizen. Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to USA TODAY that he was the captain of the Norwegian Viva.
Norwegian Cruise Line said the captain worked with local authorities right away. According to the cruise line, “He fully cooperated with the investigation, was released without restriction following his statement and immediately resumed his duties aboard the vessel to prepare for the ship’s departure.”
The cruise line also confirmed that “the safety of our guests and crew remains our top priority, and the ship continued its voyage as planned with only minor adjustments to call times.”
What Caused the Accident?
Greek officials said the accident happened because of strong winds in the area. Those winds put too much stress on the cables keeping the ship tied to the dock. When the lines snapped, the gangway moved away from the pier.
This type of event is rare but highlights how unpredictable weather can be at sea. Ports in the Mediterranean can experience sudden strong winds, especially in summer months.
Where Is Corfu?
Corfu is a popular Greek island located in the Ionian Sea. It is a common stop on Mediterranean cruise itineraries. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, historic old town, and lively port area.
What Happens Next
Greek authorities are still investigating the incident. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “the preliminary investigation remains ongoing by the Central Port Authority of Corfu and, upon its completion, the compiled case file will be officially submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office of Corfu in accordance with standard legal procedures.”
No further updates on the passenger’s condition have been released at this time.
What Cruise Travelers Should Know
Accidents like this are uncommon, but they serve as a good reminder to stay alert when boarding or leaving a cruise ship. Weather conditions can change quickly, especially in port. Always follow crew instructions during embarkation and disembarkation.
- Pay attention to crew safety announcements at each port.
- Be cautious on gangways, especially in windy or wet conditions.
- Follow any directions from port staff when boarding or leaving the ship.
- Consider travel insurance that covers medical costs abroad.
Cruise lines have safety protocols in place for situations like this. Quick action by the crew and port workers helped rescue the passenger before the situation became worse.
