Royal Caribbean to Expand Community Center in Mahahual, Mexico

Royal Caribbean Is Expanding the Community Center in Mahahual

Royal Caribbean is making a meaningful investment in the local community near one of its cruise ports in Mexico.

Royal Caribbean Plans New Community Center in Mahahual, Mexico

Royal Caribbean owns and operates the Port of Costa Maya in Mahahual, Mexico. The cruise line is now planning to build a brand-new community center for the people who live there.

The project is called the Mahahual K’iin Community Center. “K’iin” means “the sun of Mahahual” in the local language. Residents actually voted on that name themselves, which is a nice touch.

What Will the New Center Include?

The new center will replace a community space that has been in use since 2014. It will be bigger and better, with modern rooms that can be used for workshops, classes, and local events.

Outdoor sports facilities are also part of the plan. The new space will include a soccer pitch, plus basketball and volleyball courts. The location is designed to be easy for more residents to reach.

Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty shared his thoughts on the project:

“Mahahual is an important community for Royal Caribbean, and the Mahahual K’iin Community Center reflects the long-term partnership we want to continue building here. This next phase is about turning commitment into action by creating a welcoming place where children can learn, families can gather and neighbors can connect.”

A Big Deal for the Local Community

Senaida Gómez, director of the Mahahual K’iin Community Center, expressed what this means to the people of Mahahual:

“The Mahahual K’iin Community Center is the result of the strength, participation and dreams of our community. This new phase will allow us to expand our impact, strengthen our programs and create safe spaces for children, young people and families. We will continue working to ensure this center is a place of gathering, growth and well-being for everyone.”

Construction will begin after all required permits and approvals are in place.

Background: What Happened to Perfect Day Mexico?

This community center news comes after a rocky period for Royal Caribbean in Mahahual. The cruise line had big plans to build a private destination called Perfect Day Mexico at the Costa Maya port.

The project was supposed to open in 2027. It would have featured a large water park, beach clubs, and a major retail area. However, environmental groups pushed back hard. A petition against the project collected over 5 million signatures. Mexican authorities officially rejected the project in May 2026.

Royal Caribbean and the Mexican government are reportedly now exploring other locations for the Perfect Day concept.

What This Means for Cruisers Visiting Costa Maya

If you have a cruise stop at Costa Maya on the books, the port itself remains open and operating as usual. The community center project is separate from port operations and won’t affect your visit.

It’s worth noting that Royal Caribbean’s investment in Mahahual goes beyond just running a port. The new community center shows the cruise line is trying to give back to the local town that many cruise passengers pass through each year.
