Holland America Launches Biggest Fleet Upgrade in Its History

Holland America Line is making big moves. The cruise line has launched its largest fleet upgrade in its 153-year history — and it goes way beyond a fresh coat of paint.

What Is the Holland America Evolution Program?

The Evolution program is a massive refurbishment project. It covers six ships in Holland America’s fleet. The upgrades include both passenger-facing improvements and behind-the-scenes technical work.

Holland America’s President, Beth Bodensteiner, spoke about the project at an industry event. She said the goal is to make the fleet smarter and more efficient.

“Much of this work is focused on smarter power management and stronger system performance, all with the goal of reducing our consumption of energy,” she explained.

Technical Upgrades You Won’t See (But Will Benefit From)

The technical side of the project is just as important as the new décor. Holland America is investing in propulsion systems, automation, structural maintenance, and critical equipment.

Bodensteiner made it clear that reliability and safety are top priorities. “Safe, reliable operations will always be at the heart of how we operate,” she said.

The work is being done in partnership with Fincantieri. This Italian shipyard actually built every ship currently in Holland America’s fleet.

“Fincantieri is our trusted partner for rebuilds and refits, and we are excited to partner with them again for Holland America Evolution,” Bodensteiner noted.

Which Ships Are Getting Upgraded?

Six ships are part of the Evolution program. Here’s the current lineup:

• Oosterdam
• Zuiderdam
• Eurodam
• Nieuw Amsterdam
• Noordam
• Westerdam

The Oosterdam goes first. Built in 2003, it will debut its new look in late 2027. The Zuiderdam is next, heading into drydock sometime in late 2026. Timelines for the other four ships will be announced later.

New Staterooms and Cabin Categories

Passengers on the Oosterdam and Zuiderdam will find brand-new cabin options after the refurbishments. The new categories include:

• Bridgeview Suites
• Vista Suites
• Solo Verandahs

The Solo Verandahs are especially exciting for solo cruisers. Having a dedicated cabin category for solo travelers is still a welcome sight in the cruise industry.

Say Hello to the Grand Dutch Café

One of the coolest additions coming to both ships is the Grand Dutch Café. It’s a European-style coffee shop inspired by Holland America’s Dutch roots.

This venue has already been a hit on the line’s Pinnacle Class ships. Now it’s coming to the Vista-class ships for the first time. Think cozy atmosphere, great coffee, and a nod to the line’s heritage.
