Holland America Is Positioning a Ship for a Rare Sunset Eclipse

Holland America Line has announced something pretty special. Their ship, the Oosterdam, will be in place off the coast of Spain on August 12, 2026, for a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse viewing experience.

This isn’t just any eclipse view. Astronomers say that watching from this location puts you right in the path of totality — meaning a full solar eclipse.

What Makes This Eclipse So Unique

“In parts of the western Mediterranean, totality will occur low on the horizon, creating a rare ‘sunset eclipse.’ Instead of straining your neck to look straight overhead, you’ll be watching the sun and moon meet each other at the horizon, with the normally gorgeous reds and oranges of a sunset sky suddenly obscured by the moon.”

Dr. Burgasser also says to expect some stunning visual effects. “Expect long shadows, a seemingly larger-than-normal sun, a visual illusion known as the horizon-proximity effect and the potential for a dramatic diamond ring effect just as the sun dips into the sea.”

This kind of eclipse view is extremely rare. Watching totality at the horizon — instead of overhead — is something most people never get to experience.

The ship first calls in Alicante, Spain, before moving into position for the eclipse. After the big event, the Oosterdam spends a night in Barcelona. From there, guests visit Port-Vendres and Marseille in France, followed by glamorous Monte Carlo, Monaco.
