Hurtigruten to Build a Third Hybrid Expedition Ship

Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise company, has signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of their third hybrid powered expedition cruise ship.

The yet un-named new ship will be built with the same advanced technology found on Hurtigruten’s first two next-generation ships. The MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen are currently under construction at the shipyard in Norway. The new hybrid powered expedition ship will accommodate up to 530 guests. Built to tolerate some of the most extreme conditions on the planet, it will also have a specially designed, ice-strengthened hull.

All of Hurtigruten’s hybrid powered expedition ships are built to include oversized state-of-the-art battery packs. This will enable the voyages to be even more sustainable.

“These are greener, more advanced cruise ships than the world has ever seen – and ships that will raise standards for the whole industry to follow, as we enter a new era of expedition cruising driven by sustainability,” Skjeldam says.

The third Hurtigruten hybrid powered expedition ship is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2021.

Hurtigruten plans to launch the world’s first hybrid battery powered cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen, in May 2019. The second hybrid ship to launch will be the MS Fridtjof Nansen in 2020.

In operation since 1893, Hurtigruten explores unique destinations around the world. Routes stretch from the Arctic to the Antarctica plus South America, Norway, Svalbard, Greenland, Northwest Passage and other Arctic destinations
