Viking Unveils Passion Play River Cruises for 2030
Viking is bringing back one of Europe’s most remarkable cultural events — and pairing it with a river cruise. Here’s what you need to know about their new 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play voyages.
What Is the Oberammergau Passion Play?
The Passion Play is a theatrical tradition that has taken place in the small Bavarian village of Oberammergau, Germany, for nearly 400 years. It only happens once every 10 years, making each performance a once-in-a-generation experience. Thousands of people travel from around the world just to see it.

Viking has been bringing North American travelers to this event since 2010. The cruise line is also the official North American partner of the Passion Play organizers. That relationship gives Viking early access to plan special itineraries around the event.
Two New River Cruise Itineraries for 2030
Viking just announced two brand-new river cruise itineraries built around the 2030 Passion Play. Each one combines the cultural highlight of the play with some of Europe’s most stunning scenery and historic cities.
“Our guests are curious travelers who value meaningful cultural experiences and a deeper understanding of the places they visit,” said Leah Talactac, president and CEO of Viking.
“By pairing this extraordinary event with a Rhine or Danube voyage, guests can explore some of Europe’s most historic destinations while experiencing a tradition that has endured for nearly 400 years,” Talactac added.
Oberammergau, Innsbruck and the Rhine
This 13-day journey runs from Amsterdam to Munich. It takes you along the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dotted with castles, cathedrals, and charming medieval towns. You’ll also explore the famous food traditions of France’s Alsace region and visit the Austrian city of Innsbruck.
The highlight, of course, is attending the Passion Play in Oberammergau. The trip wraps up with an overnight stay in Munich, Bavaria’s historic capital city.
Oberammergau with Salzburg
This 12-day itinerary starts in Oberammergau and ends in Budapest, Hungary. You’ll sail the Danube River through Germany, Austria, and Hungary, taking in some of Central Europe’s most beautiful landscapes and cities. Stops include Bavaria and the stunning city of Salzburg.
The Passion Play experience is built right into the heart of this itinerary. It’s a great option if you want a deeper dive into Central Europe alongside the cultural event.
A New Online Resource for Travelers
Viking has also launched a dedicated webpage about the Passion Play. It covers the history of the event, cultural background, and destination details for each itinerary. You can find it on the Viking website if you want to learn more before deciding.
