Viking Sea: A Decade of Sailing Excellence for Cruise Travelers
The Viking Sea just hit a major milestone — 10 years of sailing the world’s oceans for Viking Cruises. Here’s a look at how this ship got its start and what’s coming up next.
A Ship With a Storied Beginning
The Viking Sea was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy. It was delivered on March 24, 2016, making it the second ship in Viking’s ocean fleet.

After its first sailings in the Mediterranean and Western Europe, the ship had a special christening ceremony. The event took place on May 5, 2016, on the Thames River in Greenwich, England.
Karine Hagen, daughter of Viking founder Torstein Hagen, served as the ship’s godmother. The celebration featured concerts by Norwegian soprano Sissel and The Olav’s Choir, plus a fireworks display.
Where the Viking Sea Sails Today
The Viking Sea carries up to 930 passengers and weighs 47,000 tons. In 2026, the ship is back in Europe for its summer season.
Over the next few months, the ship will sail from ports in Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Greece. Homeports include Tarragona, Chioggia, Istanbul, and Piraeus.
Exciting Winter Plans for 2026-27
The Viking Sea heads to the Caribbean for the winter season. In October, it will reposition from Barcelona to San Juan, Puerto Rico, on a 13-night voyage.
After that, a series of 10-night Eastern Caribbean cruises will follow. These sailings are a great fit for U.S. travelers looking for a winter escape.
In December, the ship offers something truly special. A 21-night voyage to South America and the Amazon will visit destinations in Brazil, French Guiana, and Tobago.
Viking’s Growing Fleet
The Viking Sea kicked off a wave of new ships for Viking Cruises. Since then, 11 more similar ships have joined the fleet, including the Viking Vesta, delivered in 2025.
Two more ships are set to arrive in 2026: the Viking Mira and the Viking Libra. The Viking Libra is a big deal — it will be the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, capable of operating with zero emissions.
Viking also has 10 more ocean ships on order with Fincantieri through 2031. That group includes two new expedition vessels, showing just how fast Viking is growing.
