Koningsdam: A Decade of Sailing the Seas With Holland America Line

Koningsdam: A Decade of Sailing With Holland America Line

Holland America’s Koningsdam just hit a big milestone — 10 years of sailing for the line since its debut in 2016.

A Decade of Sailing: The Koningsdam Story

The Koningsdam was built in Italy at Fincantieri’s Marghera Shipyard. It weighs in at 99,500 tons and was the first ship in Holland America’s Pinnacle class. It was also the biggest ship the line had ever built at the time.

How It All Started

The ship was delivered on March 31, 2016. It holds up to 2,660 passengers and kicked off its first season in Northern Europe. After a naming ceremony, it arrived at its first homeport in Amsterdam in May 2016.

From Amsterdam, the Koningsdam sailed routes around Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea. It then moved to the Mediterranean in the fall of 2016. Later that year, it crossed the Atlantic for the first time to spend the winter sailing the Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale.

Heading West

In 2022, the Koningsdam made its way to the West Coast for its first-ever Alaska and Canada season. It’s back in that region again this year. Right now, it’s offering Alaska cruises departing from Vancouver.

What’s Coming Next for the Koningsdam

The ship has some exciting itineraries on the horizon for U.S. travelers.

San Diego and the Mexican Riviera

In October 2026, the Koningsdam will homeport in San Diego. From there, it will offer trips ranging from 7 to 18 nights. Destinations include the Mexican Riviera and Hawaii.

A South Pacific Adventure

In early 2027, the Koningsdam is set to sail a 35-night voyage to the South Pacific. This cruise is part of Holland America’s Legendary Voyages program. It visits ten destinations across Hawaii, French Polynesia, and Kiribati.

Stops include some truly special places. Think Tahiti, Honolulu, Nuku Hiva, and the remote Fanning Island. It’s a bucket-list kind of trip for travelers who want to go beyond the usual ports.

Fresh Updates After Drydock

Earlier this year, the Koningsdam came out of a drydock at the Grand Bahama Shipyard with some notable upgrades. Passengers will find new staterooms and refreshed public spaces throughout the ship.

New Rooms and Revamped Spaces

The new staterooms were built with groups in mind. Holland America said they “were designed for groups travelling together and accommodate up to four guests.” There are also more larger oceanview cabins available now.

Beyond the cabins, the ship features refreshed live music venues, a bigger casino, and a brand-new Effy jewelry shop. It’s a solid refresh for a ship that’s already well-loved by Holland America fans.
