Cruise passenger dies on Norwegian Cruise Lines’ private island
A tragic incident occurred at Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas. Here’s what we know so far.
What Happened at Great Stirrup Cay
On May 3, an 83-year-old American man died at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island destination in the Bahamas. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the death, which is being treated as a suspected drowning. The man’s identity has not been released.

The victim had been snorkeling with his son near the beach. According to authorities, “he and his father had been snorkelling along the beach. As they were finishing, he moved ahead but soon noticed his father had stopped.”
The son returned to find his father unresponsive in the water and without his snorkel mask. He called for help, and a lifeguard along with medical personnel responded to the scene.
Investigation Is Still Ongoing
The exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Police say an autopsy is still pending. Norwegian Cruise Line had not responded to media requests for comment at the time of this report.
Similar Incidents at Other Private Island Destinations
Sadly, this is not an isolated event in the cruise industry. In August, two separate drownings occurred at Carnival Cruise Line’s private Bahamas destination, Celebration Key. These back-to-back tragedies have raised questions about water safety at private cruise line destinations.
Water Safety Tips for Cruise Travelers
If you plan to snorkel or swim at a private island stop, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Never snorkel alone. Always stay within sight of a buddy.
- Know your limits. Ocean currents and waves can be unpredictable.
- Check in with lifeguards. Ask about any known hazards in the water before you enter.
- Wear a life vest if needed. Most private islands offer them free of charge.
- Watch for signs of fatigue. Older travelers and those with health conditions should be especially cautious.
Our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of the man who passed away. We will update this post as more details become available.
