Carnival Luminosa Launches Its Inaugural San Francisco Season

The Carnival Luminosa has arrived in San Francisco, and it’s bringing some exciting cruise options to the West Coast. Here’s everything you need to know about this ship’s new home and where it’s headed.

Carnival Luminosa Is Now Homeporting in San Francisco

The Carnival Luminosa has started its first full season sailing out of the Port of San Francisco. The ship spent the winter cruising Australian waters before making its way to California in late April.

The Luminosa replaced the Carnival Legend, which previously handled the San Francisco schedule. It’s a solid upgrade for West Coast cruisers looking for fresh options close to home.

What Cruises Are Available from San Francisco?

The Luminosa is offering two main types of itineraries this season: short four-night getaways and longer ten-night adventures.

Short Cruises to Mexico

The four-night sailings head down to Baja California. You’ll visit Ensenada and spend two days cruising the Pacific Ocean. These shorter trips are great if you want a quick escape without taking too much time off work.

Longer Cruises to Alaska and Canada

The ten-night itineraries sail north toward Alaska and Canada. Ships depart San Francisco on Mondays or Thursdays, giving you some flexibility in planning.

Originally, these longer cruises included scenic cruising at Tracy Arm Fjord. However, Carnival dropped that stop earlier this year due to geological conditions in the area. The good news? The Luminosa now cruises Endicott Arm Fjord instead, which Carnival says offers equally breathtaking scenery.

A Special Repositioning Voyage to Japan

The San Francisco season wraps up in late September. After that, the Luminosa sets off on an epic 18-night repositioning cruise from San Francisco all the way to Tokyo.

This voyage is a dream trip for many cruisers. Before crossing the Pacific, the ship visits:

• Ketchikan, Alaska
• Icy Strait Point, Alaska
• Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

Then it continues on to four ports in Japan:

• Otaru
• Aomori
• Shimizu
• Kobe

After reaching Japan, the ship heads to Southeast Asia for a scheduled drydock. It will then begin another season in Australia and the South Pacific.

When Will the Luminosa Return to San Francisco?

Carnival has already announced that the Luminosa is expected to return to San Francisco for the summer of 2027. So if you miss this season, another chance is on the horizon.

About the Carnival Luminosa

The Luminosa was originally built in 2009 for Costa Cruises. Carnival took over the ship in 2022 and gave it a major makeover before adding it to their fleet.

The refurbishment brought in many of Carnival’s most popular venues. Guests can now enjoy the Limelight Lounge, Piano Bar 88, and the beloved Alchemy Bar. The ship holds about 2,260 guests, making it a mid-sized ship that’s easy to navigate.
