NCL announced today that it is “changing the face of cruise line entertainment.” Aboard the new Norwegian Epic will be the Blue Man Group, a “big top” at sea featuring Cirque Dreams, Headliners Comedy Club with the hilarious improvisational Second City troupe and Fat Cats, a 200-seat jazz club featuring world-class jazz musicians.
Norwegian Epic is designed with multiple entertainment venues throughout the ship. The usual cruise ship entertainment of two nightly production shows is being replaced with a number of entertainment options in specially-designed venues, some never before offered at sea. NCL intends for their unique entertainment to appeal to a wide spectrum of cruise passengers.
The Blue Man Group will perform eight full-scale productions a week in the ship’s 685-seat Epic Theater. Blue Man Group is best known for their wildly popular theatrical shows and concerts which combine music, comedy and multimedia theatrics to produce a totally unique form of entertainment.
The “big top at sea” is an intimate 265-seat theater-in-the-round which will present Cirque Dreams® and Dinner. This will be an interactive theatrical dining experience performed with music, acrobatics and the creative craziness that is at the core of a Cirque du Soleil performance.
Norwegian, in an exclusive partnership with Second City, has constructed a 280-seat comedy club designed in show lounge format similar to the original Second City Theater in Chicago. The famed set will have the familiar small raised stage, concrete floors, minimal props and brick walls. The ensemble will perform a special customized comedy revue of satirical skits, hilarious songs and inventive improvisation.
Clearly, Norwegian Cruise Line is continuing their 42-year history of changing the landscape on traditional cruising. Their Freestyle Cruising concept has revolutionized the industry by allowing guests more freedom and flexibility. The 4,200 passenger Norwegian Epic will begin cruising the eastern Caribbean on July 17, 2010, sailing an alternate eastern/western Caribbean itinerary through April 11, 2011. Rates for an inside stateroom begin at $699 per person.
